What is BFFP? Which are the most polluting companies as per BFFP?
Humankind is facing environmental degradation which is a common concern for all over the
past few decades. Surprisingly environmental degradation is caused more due to human
interference and human activities rather than natural calamities or phenomena today. For
example mindless consumerism or economic growth has started to destroy mother nature at
an alarming rate. In spite off the current status of the environment and its harmful effects well known to us in the future the desire for economic development at the cost of hurting mother nature has not curbed. A lot of emphasis has been placed on the role of science and
technology being the reason for integrating ecology with economics. Through the integration
of ecology and economics came the concept of sustainable development. Now sustainable
development is nothing but economic development which is mindful and a path towards
economic advancement which does not create adverse effects on the environment. The
buzzword sustainable development brings about the concept of green and clean better out.
Sustainable development and achievement of a clean and green environment requires
humankind to alter our ways and means of living and mindful decision making. For example
did you know that plastic is polluting our oceans and creating water life to go extinct and
super unhealthy? A lot of plastic pollution is caused by big business giants. If these business
giants are made to realise what time they are causing to the environment and are asked to
either minimise pollution or also be responsible to clean up the contamination that they
cause, we would be moving towards sustainable development.
A great global initiative was launched in 2016 called Break Free From Plastic (BFFP).
Thousands of volunteers and non-governmental organisations participate and help

Seven of these top 10 polluters were made to sign a pact Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New
Plastics Economy Global Commitment in October 2018, which requires them to “eliminate all
unnecessary plastic” while reusing or recycling plastic items in a circular system and create
more sustainable substitutes.
These 10 polluters contaminate the ocean water so much so that a lot of water life has gone
extinct and the water has been poisoned. Such an increase in water pollution would have a
devastating impact on human health, ecological systems, and climate change.

received in 2020 Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Ltd, Unilever and
