The Future of Solar Energy in India

According to a study done in the year 2021, the total solar energy harnessed by India was at 60.4 terawatt-hours (TWh) as opposed to 50.1 terawatt-hours in the year 2020. In India, there are a lot of tropical areas where the temperatures can hit all-time highs. We must implement solar panels or alternate ways of harnessing the sun’s energy so that it can be used to generate electricity.

India with a population of 1.39 billion has been facing problems concerning energy shortage. Solar energy is a renewable source of energy that our country can possess to convert to electrical energy or any other applications as well.

Here is why solar energy is the next big step for the country:

• Being a tropical region, India receives almost 3000 hours of sunshine. Due to so much exposure to sunlight, it can be harnessed easily and be utilized to produce sufficient or more than sufficient amounts of electricity on overcast days using solar modules.
• The equipment required to convert solar energy into electrical energy has a longer life and requires less maintenance while also ensuring security for higher energy infrastructure.
• The cost of running such systems is less.
• These systems are environmentally friendly as they do not produce any harmful gasses or do not have any byproducts as a part of the conversion process. This makes this system very convenient to use.
• The cost of the infrastructure may be high as an initial investment but it is worth the cost because of the long-term impact it has on the economy. 

Solar energy can be used for several purposes like heating, cooking, drying, and generating electricity. In a country like ours where we generate a lot of pollution in the form of smoke and other pollutants, making use of this energy will benefit the country as a whole by making it a lot cleaner than it currently is.

However, the disadvantages of making use of solar energy are as follows:

• Solar energy cannot be generated 24/7. During the nighttime, we cannot generate any energy. But during day time, if the weather is cloudy or rainy, then it will not be feasible to generate energy.
• Areas that receive a lot of sunlight would be best to make use of solar energy while in those areas which see sunlight for a mere 4 to 5 hours, it doesn’t make sense for them to deploy such systems on a large scale.
• Solar energy power production is a lot less as opposed to other forms of energy generation.
• Solar panels require regular maintenance with proper care so that they function with good efficiency.
